Graphite, Colored Pencils, Wax Pastels, Watercolors and other drawing media all have unique histories to tell in how and why they were developed. Stefan will weave these histories into a broader education on what the unique qualities are for each medium and how modern day production methods effect those qualities. He will also touch on some special techniques and applications that can be used for certain drawing media.
Stefan Lohrer has an in-depth knowledge of drawing materials in terms of pigments, chemistry, archival qualities and techniques for using the materials from his years in the art business and love for art. Stefan was born in Zürich, Switzerland, but moved with his family to New York where his father eventually began importing Caran d’Ache art materials in 1974. Stefan joined the family business in 1978 and worked in a variety of positions before setting out on his own. He returned to Caran d’Ache in 2002 and has remained a valuable resource under the new owners. Because of his love for the arts, and close relationship with many of the people at Caran d’Ache in Geneva, particularly the chief chemist, Eric Vitus, Stefan is constantly learning more about art materials.
